My Birthday

Yes, my birthday is March 25th. Please send money. Lots O' money. The more the merrier.
In fact, send Gold. Gold coins. Not that 24KT plated cheap crap either. 1924 St. Gaudens, or Walking Liberty coins will do. Double Eagle's as well. If you can't send money or Gold due to import tarrifs, local or state laws, Federal restrictions, etc., then don't bother wishing me Happy Birthday. 50 years old ain't all it's cracked up to be. Gawd, I feel old. Is it time to retire yet?

Writer's Block: Educated guess

How has your education prepared you for your current or intended career? Do you wish you had taken a different path academically? Would you consider transferring or going back to school?

I seem to be one of the very few whose chosen higher education paid off. I started with BASIC programming on an old 110 baud teletype which was connected to the University Main Frame using an acoustic modem. In Senior high school. Now can you guess how old I am? But wait, it gets better. I eventually transferred to the Univ. of Calif., Santa Cruz (Go Slugs!) and finished with a BA in Computer Science, where I have been ever since. Strange thing about Comp Sci, it was obsolete essentially as I received my Diploma.

I would consider going back to school only if I could recapture those halcyon days at UCSC. But since you can never go back, most likely I would not even try. (sigh!) Getting old and worldly sucks. I wish I could be young, dumb and ignorant again. I was happier then.

A philosophy to live by

Better Windows

“The box said ‘Requires Windows 95 or better’. So, I installed LINUX.”

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.
